25 Must See Photos of Italy

Three years ago, I took my Mom on a two week vacation to Italy.  It’s always been a dream of hers to visit the motherland, so I was happy to be in a position to finally see that her dream was fulfilled.  Despite a few tense moments that were to be expected when a mother and her 32 year old son team up to travel, it was a great trip.  We visited Rome, toured the Colosseum, saw the Vatican, traveled to Sicily, walked the beaches, drove the countryside, and ate gelato until our hearts were content.

Whether you’ve been to Italy or have only seen photos, I think you’ll find a mother-son take to be a fresh perspective on such a beautiful country.  So without further ado, may I present 25 must see photos of Italy like you’ve never seen before.

  1. Oh, my goodness! This has me rolling on the floor laughing! What wonderful memories, and….well, I didn’t realize what a “great?” picture taker I was untill actually seeing this!

Thank you for this post — GREAT, as usual! And, thanks for giving your old mama the trip of a lifetime — my dream-come-true!

Keep up the great work, Chris!

    • Thanks for reading, Cheree. We didn’t have the advantage of taking a million photos of leaves, and rocks, and rigatoni back during the film age. Thank goodness for the invention of digital age ;)

      • I feel a bit gypped that our trip to Europe didn’t have more documentation of the really important things… instead I just have a bunch of pictures of people on mountain tops, walking across bridges, riding scooters and the like!

  2. Well, crap. This totally made my trip to Italy feel incomplete. Nowhere in my files do I have a picture of you taking a picture of your mother taking a picture of ANYTHING! My lazy whore of a travel agent just lost a star on her rating for that oversight.

    • It’s a fun time. I suggest all sons travel abroad with their Mom sometime. However, we started out the trip with the idea of sharing a room to save money. That idea lasted less than one night. So budget properly. :)

    • Thanks! We’re both knuckleheads and stuck out like a sore thumb. Me with my green hoodie and my Mom with her camera wrapped around her neck. Total tourists. But we met a lot of nice folks and had a good time. Cheers.

  3. How come your dad didn’t take any pictures? If he had a camera, you could have pulled off a hat trick…photo of a photo of a photo….throw in a mirror and you have art.

  4. Ok, We may be related cause our mom’s seem to be the same person. (Actually mine’s been gone for almost 15 years, but… ) I have pictures (from her) of the cat in the shop window in Murano, vegetables in the market in Paris, long words in Germany.

Thanks to you and your mom for the belly laughs! (Also thanks for liking my blog– that’s how I found this. )

    • Thanks Laura! Sorry to hear about your mum, but glad you have the memories. That’s mainly why I wanted to take the trip. That, and well, it’s Italy! Didn’t take too much twisting my arm. Thanks for the link. I’ll check it out. Cheers.

  5. Chris, thanks for visiting my blog. I really enjoyed this post because my mom has the same habits when taking pics. Eh, maybe we all do. Haha. I’m headed to Italy next month. We’ll see what kind of pics I come back with :)

    • Yes! Well, enjoy the heck out of your trip. Me and my Mom know all the hot spots if you need some pointers. I can tell you where to get a good leaf photo. Send me some pics when you get back! Have fun.

  6. Hilarious! I took my mom to Ireland a couple years before she died. It was the only time she ever went outside the country. I didn’t take any pictures of her taking pictures, but I have one of her standing there staring at a somewhat disturbing sculpture memorializing those who died on the ships during the famine trying to get to America.

  7. Looks like you found a heart string that connects us all. My daughter and I also went to Italy and have very similar pictures ~ its times like that, that reopen our hearts to the beauty surrounding us (that’s my story about why I take so many pictures and I’m sticking to it!). Can’t wait to show my daughter your pics. Thanks Chris!

  8. Your pictures made me homesick for Italy. Which is weird, since Italy is not my home. But maybe I wish it were. was. whichever.
Thanks for noticing my blog, “So Fair and Bright.” And good luck with the half-beard look.

  9. My favourites were of you both taking pictures of grass. I found that deeply moving, for some reason. When i return to Italy, I, too, will take pictures of grass. And I shall also take pictures of my girlfriend taking pictures of grass. Then we will both know that we have been to Italy and seen the grass. And we shall rejoice. Together.

  10. Now I have stopped laughing, again at your posts, I believe Mums across the world are in envy… but not for being taken to Italy but for having a son who notices them long enough to take a photo!
Of course my own two sons are always taking photos of me!

  11. Hefrickinglarious! Some of the best photos I’ve ever seen of Italy!! Not really. But definitely the most humorous photos of Italy I’ve ever seen.

Your photo of the cats is brilliant.

  12. I am glad I was able to view these truly great photos. Congratulations on getting it together and taking the trip with your Mom. I contemplate d taking my late Mom to go see her homeland, actually she was born in Ontario, but her eldest sister and her parents were Swedes born in Finland. But by the time we were planning it, she was confined to a wheelchair. We discussed and she was concerned it would be too difficuly, awkward and even painful for her. So we didnt make it over. Your photos are great fun, of an obviously memorable trip. One I marvel at is the posed pack of feral cats. So it is possible to herd cats after all.
